Quality control

Monitoring data quality

To maintain the quality of our database, some of the registered data for each HIV treatment centre are reviewed annually. Data monitors from our quality control unit check the entered data for accuracy and completeness by comparing them to the source records, such as the medical file, electronic lab results, and additional tests.

Safeguarding protocol and privacy

SHM's data monitors also check that protocol and privacy regulations have been adhered to during patient registration and data collection. They identify any issues and coach the data collectors at the treatment centres to improve the quality and efficiency of the data collection process. Data monitors also coordinate database cleaning and, if necessary, any review of specific data stored in the database.

The animated film below explains how we achieve and maintain the high quality of our data.

Stichting HIV Monitoring

Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) makes an essential contribution to healthcare for HIV-positive people in the Netherlands.  Working with all recognised HIV treatment centres in the Netherlands, SHM systematically collects coded medical data from all registered HIV patients. SHM uses these data to produce centre-specific reports that allow HIV treatment centres to optimise their patient care and obtain formal certification. SHM’s data also form the basis for the yearly HIV monitoring report and are used in HIV-related research in the Netherlands and internationally. The outcome of SHM’s research provides tangible input into HIV care and prevention polices in the Netherlands.
