Colette studied human nutrition and trained as an epidemiologist at Wageningen University. After a short period working at the department of infectious disease epidemiology at the National Institute for Public Health and Environment, she subsequently started her PhD research in 2002 with the Amsterdam Cohort Studies at the Amsterdam public health service (GGD Amsterdam). This resulted in her PhD thesis entitled: ‘25 years of HIV: Trends in mortality, HIV-coinfections, and HIV-related risk behaviour’.

Since 2006, Colette has been working as a senior researcher for Stichting HIV Monitoring, where her main areas of research are: HIV co-infections, viral hepatitis, quality of HIV care, epidemiology of HIV infection in children, and pregnancies in women living with HIV.
