Marc van der Valk MD, PhD works as an internist-infectiologist in the Infectious Diseases department at Amsterdam UMC, where he is head of the HIV outpatient clinic. From April 2021 he forms the SHM Board together with drs. Sima Zaheri. Jointly they are responsible for the operational management of the organisation.

Marc has extensive clinical and research experience in HIV care and viral hepatitis. His research is aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of HIV with a focus on co-morbidity and co-infections. He is a senior researcher of the AGEhIV ​​research and principal researcher of the Amsterdam MC FREE consortium (Amsterdam MSM HCV Free). Since 2020, he has coordinated research from Amsterdam UMC on making peer to peer support in HIV care more sustainable and since 2021 he has led a project in which patient-reported outcome measures can be meaningfully implemented in HIV care.

From 2014-2020, he was chairman of the Dutch Association of HIV Treatment Professionals (NVHB) and chairman of the board of the HIV Monitoring Foundation; he is a board member of the H-TEAM as well as of the Amsterdam Dinner Foundation. He is a member of the HIV treatment guideline of the European AIDS Clinical society and the Dutch HCV and HBV treatment guideline and was a member of the national HIV treatment guideline from 2013-2020. He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the AIDS fund.
