Transient episodes of low level viremia ("blip") in patients with suppressed viral replication during HAART are believed to be a result of HIV release from latent reservoirs in combination with ongoing low level productive infection. The clinical importance of blips remains unclear. Rates of viral blips within our cohort of patients treated with HAART varied strongly, depending on the definitions used. In this study, we found that patients who experienced low level transient viremia ("blips") had a similar clinical outcome after three years of HAART as patients who maintained HIV-RNA levels <50 copies/ml continuously.
