Dear reader,

On 19 November 2013, the 7th Netherlands Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Epidemiology, Prevention and Treatment took place at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam. In this newsletter we look back at the conference and include interviews with some of this year’s guest speakers including Javier Martinez-Picado, Rochelle Walensky and Jürgen Rockstroh. Each interview focuses on the subject they discussed in their presentation at the conference.

New this year is that we have recorded the presentations of the guest speakers, who granted permission to do so, as webcasts. I invite those who could not attend the conference and those who want to see one of the presentations once more to take a look at the webcasts available at the NCHIV website (www.nchiv.org). Finally, in this newsletter we discuss our yearly Monitoring Report which has recently been published.

I hope that you enjoy reading this newsletter.

With kind regards,

Peter Reiss
Directeur, Stichting HIV Monitoring

An important conclusion of this year’s report is that there is a sustained increase in the number of HIV-infected patients in care in Dutch treatment centres.

Besides reporting on the HIV epidemic in the Netherlands, this year’s report also contains a section on hepatitis C co-infection. A press release about both subjects has been sent out and can also be found on our website.

Publicatie review

The Presence of CXCR4-Using HIV-1 Prior to Start of Antiretroviral Therapy Is an Independent Predictor of Delayed Viral Suppression.
Disease progression is accelerated in untreated patients with HIV variants that are using the CXCR4 coreceptor. After initiation of cART it also appears to take longer to achieve viral suppression. However, the reconstitution of the immune system is similar to that of patients without this HIV variant.

Non-AIDS defining cancers in the D:A:D Study - time trends and predictors of survival: a cohort study.
Also for HIV patients cancers are an important cause of mortality. For lung cancer and disseminated cancer the prognosis is worse than for other types of cancer. For modifiable risk factors, such as smoking and low CD4 counts, the same is also true.

Changes in First-Line cART Regimens and Short-Term Clinical Outcome between 1996 and 2010 in The Netherlands.
Changes in the use of first-line cART in the Netherlands between 1996 and 2010 closely follow changes in treatment guidelines. Because adherence has improved due to newer drugs with better tolerability, the immunologic and virologic response has improved.
