New ECDC modelling tool to estimate HIV incidence

16 September 2015

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has launched a new tool to estimate HIV incidence. Senior SHM analyst Ard van Sighem developed the tool in collaboration with a team of international experts. The ECDC HIV modelling tool allows estimation of the number of people living with HIV, including those not yet diagnosed, the annual number of new infections, average time between infection and diagnosis, and the number of people needing treatment based on CD4 cell count. This tool should provide better estimates in countries with case-based surveillance data. SHM will use the tool to calculate estimates for the HIV-positive population in the Netherlands, and will report the results in the upcoming Monitoring Report.
