Stichting HIV Monitoring The Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) was founded in 2001 as a result of the successful 'AIDS Therapy Evaluation in the Netherlands' project (ATHENA). Its goal was to evaluate the effect of HIV treatment with the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The project started in 1998. In 2000 the final report was presented to the Minister of Healthcare during the symposium 'Monitoring of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) Infection'. One of the recommendations in the report was to continue ATHENA structurally as part of health care. This meant monitoring all HIV patients and maintaining a registry of new infections. This recommendation led to the creation of the SHM. Since 2001, patient data are collected and analysed by the SHM in collaboration with 24 HIV treatment centres including 25 hospitals throughout the country. Findings are presented in a scientific report, published each year on the first of December (World AIDS Day).
